Following NAMM in January, Martin has launched some more new guitars.
D-28 John Lennon
A somewhat simpler version of the 75th Anniversary Edition launched at NAMM earlier this year, the D-28 John Lennon is essentially a D-28 with fancy headstock and fretboard inlays, and the beautiful peace sign on the back. However, this comes without the blingy rosette and pickguard on the more expensive 75th Anni edition.
Also note that the US$5499 retail price would mean that you get Indian rosewood instead of Madagascar rosewood on the more expensive (US$11900 retail) sibling.
New X-Series with Macassar HPL bodies
The X-series sees the introduction of Macassar HPL on its guitars. Martin has continued to produce interesting grain patterns on HPL. Players of the more entry level X series will be familiar with the Koa and Rosewood pattern HPL on previous models.
Solid sapele top with Macassar HPL body (US$779 retail)
DCX1AE Macassar (US$929 retail) and GPCX2AE Macassar (US$929 retail)
In adding a cutaway on these two models, the retail price is slightly higher as with most other guitar makers.
These should be popular with players who want to own a Martin at lower price points. The X Series typically go for about $1000 here in SG. Having said that, potential buyers should not be overly carried away by the brand on headstock. 🙂
